Chinese  painting

(中国画)

Chinese painting is an art. The painting is done by using a brush on paper or silk, often with black ink alone. It is a monochromatic(黑白的) work of art, perhaps, derived from calligraphy. A Chinese painting is a distinctive object based on centuries-old traditions common to many things in China.

The roots of Chinese painting can be traced back to Chinese Neolithic (新石器时代) pottery. Chinese painting was closely related to crafts like pottery as observed in the decorations, used on decorative bronzes, carved jade and lacquer (漆) ware, such as figures of fish, frogs, deer, birds, flowers and so on. Paintings were mainly painted on silk or walls before the Tang Dynasty, and mural paintings (壁画) were particularly popular.

Classical Chinese painting can be divided into three categories: landscapes, figures and bird-and-flower.

Landscape painting had already established an independent form of expression by the 4th century. It gradually developed into two separate styles, mainly “blue-and-green” and “ink-and-wash” landscapes. The blue-and-green landscape used bright blue, green and red pigments (天然色素)derived from minerals to create a richly decorative style. The ink-and-wash landscape relied on vivid brushwork with varying degrees of intensity of ink to express the artist’s conception of nature, his own emotions and individuality(个性,个人嗜好).

The art of figure painting during the Tang Dynasty (618-906 AD) was considered the golden age of figure painting. Historical subjects and scenes of courtly life were popular. Paintings of historical character and stories of everyday life became extremely popular. Also, techniques were further refined.

Bird-and-flower painting was separated from decorative art and form an independent genre around the 9th century. Many well-known artists painted in this genre during the Song Dynasty and their themes included a rich variety of flowers, fruits, insects and fish. Many of the scholarly painters working with ink and brush used a great economy of line. They produced paintings illustrating things such as plum blossoms, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums(菊花), pines and cypresses (柏树) which reflect their own ideals and characters.

Based on different standards, Chinese traditional painting can be divided into several groups as follows:
1. Techniques
According to painting techniques, Chinese painting can be divided into two styles: xieyi style and gongbi style. Xieyi is marked by exaggerated (夸张的) forms and freehand brushwork. Gongbi is characterized (使具有……特征) by close attention to detail and fine brushwork. Freehand painting generalizes (概括) shapes and shows rich brushwork and ink techniques.
2. Forms
The main forms of traditional Chinese painting are the hanging scroll (立轴), album of paintings (画册), fan surface and long horizontal scroll (横轴). Hanging scrolls are usually hung on the wall. In an album of paintings the artist paints on a certain size of xuan paper and then puts a number of paintings into an album, which is convenient for keeping. Folding fans and round fans made of bamboo go with painted paper or silk. The long horizontal scroll is also called a hand scroll and is usually less than 50 centimeters high but may be up to 100 meters long.
3. Subjects
Traditional Chinese paintings can be divided as figure paintings, landscapes and flower-and-bird paintings. Landscapes represent a major kind in traditional Chinese painting, mainly drawing the natural scenery of mountains and rivers. The range of subject matter in figure paintings was extended (延伸) far beyond religious stories during the Song Dynasty. Landscape paintings had already been established as an independent form of expression by the fourth century. They gradually developed into two separate styles: blue-and-green landscapes using bright blue, green and red pigments (颜料) and ink-and-wash landscapes depending on vivid brushwork and inks. The flower-and-bird painting developed from decorative art. It formed its own independent character around the ninth century.
